About the Book

For those suffering from chronic pain, even after years of surgery, rehabilitation, and medication, only one question matters: How do I find lasting relief?

With Freedom from Pain, two pioneers in the field reveal a crucial missing piece for millions in need–the unresolved emotional trauma held within the body.

The path our of pain is unique for each person, explain Peter Levine and Maggie Phillips. It’s a labyrinth shaped by physical injury, genetics, learned responses, and–crucially–prior traumatic events. When all of these elements are successfully addressed, complete recovery begins. This book will teach readers how. Informed by a broad new vision of the pain response, decades of clinical insight, and guided practices on audio CD, Drs. Levine and Phillips teach us how to:

  • Calm the overractive “fight” response to pain
  • Release the fear, irritability, and depression amplified by prior traumas
  • Build resilience and promote self-regulation
  • Target specific conditions such as joint and muscle pain, migraines, and the aftermath of surgical procedures
  • Amplify their current treatment program to achieve true, long-term freedom from pain.
